On the fourth day of the conference, an afternoon field trip is being planned to the Ixtapa estuary where deposits have been found from tsunamis caused by the September 21, 1985 M 7.6 earthquake and the March 14, 1979 M 7.6 earthquake. Trenching was done in the region in order to discover the deposits. Participants will have the opportunity to go into a trench and see the deposits as well as receive an explanation of the work performed. If logistically possible, the field trip will include a visit to a local village where natives will discuss their experiences during the tsunamis. Participants should bring hiking boots or good walking shoes.
