The conference will span five days with plenary sessions of invited keynote and contributed talks. Following each oral session, break-out group discussions and a synthesis of these discussions will stimulate exchange of ideas.  A field trip to the Laguna del Maule volcanic field is planned for the second day. Poster sessions will be held during the afternoons of the 3rd and 4th days.  On the 5th day, we will re-focus on integration (topic 4 below) and prepare a synthesis report that addresses: (1) current consensus on what we know about large silicic magma systems, and (2) the most promising ways forward to merge disciplinary approaches and drive progress.

The meeting will be organized around four thematic topics:

  • Dimensions of reservoirs and location of melt within active systems
  • Growth and evolution of large silicic magma systems on long and short timescales
  • Interpreting signals of unrest to improve eruption forecasting
  • Integration of geophysics, petrochronology, and numerical modeling to understand magma-crust interaction

The thematic sessions will include invited keynote and contributed papers. The sessions will be interdisciplinary with presentations that emphasize the limits of current understanding, and in parallel the most promising pathways forward toward improved understanding of these types of magmatic systems.  Accordingly, we will begin and end the conference with presentations and discussion of Topic 4 to promote cross-disciplinary, integrative, and forward-looking thinking and ideas.
